A Web-Based, Interactive Tutorial and Reference Database in Thoracic Tumor Imaging

Authors:

Roland Talanow, MD, PhD, The Cleveland Clinic; Hans-Holger Jend, MD, Klinikum Bremen-Ost

Background:

It can be difficult, particularly for radiology residents and less experienced radiologists who are not specialized in chest radiology, to differentiate between benign and malignant findings in chest imaging. An interactive, step-by-step tutorial to train & refresh knowledge about benign and malignant findings in chest imaging is desirable.

Evaluation:

This online chest tutorial consists of over 150 pages, and over 330 images, covering plain film, CT, MRI, angiography, nuclear medicine, and pathology. Chapters offer learning material about tumor appearance and location; SPN/mass; carcinoid, adeno-CA, SCC, and other pseudotumors; development of metastases; TNM; and therapy induced pattern. Staging tools enhance the learning experience. Pre- and post-tests evaluate the learning progress. Freetext search and predefined menus allow the individual display of contents.

Discussion:

We present an interactive tutorial which affords radiology residents and less experienced radiologists a comprehensive learning tool, as well as a quick reference, to differentiate between benign and malignant findings in chest imaging. Automatic staging tools help making staging of common chest malignancies easy and accurate. Free online access and interactive features are constantly and quickly available, enhancing the learning experience for the user.

Conclusion:

Junior radiology residents, as well as clinicians who are less experienced radiologically, will benefit from this web-based, interactive thoracic tumor tutorial. The tutorial will help them become familiar with malignant findings in chest imaging.
